Why Jean?
I love this work. For over 20 years as a psychotherapist and marriage counselor, I’ve been helping New Yorkers create stronger, more loving relationships.
The research tells us active therapists get the best results. I’m not a therapist who nods and says “Hmmm,” or who just keeps asking you and your partner to “share your feelings” until she says “Time’s up.”
I listen carefully to understand where you’re coming from and to help you strengthen your best self. Working with individuals and couples I draw on evidence-based research and offer the tools and support you need to build on your strengths and create a more fulfilling, harmonious relationship.
We’re a team. I work hard for you and your relationship. And I’ll expect and encourage you to bring your whole self to the creative and challenging process of healing and growth.
You may have seen or heard me quoted in The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Chicago Tribune, National Public Radio, Vogue, Brides, Forbes, CNN International, Women’s Health and many other media outlets where the subject is marriage and family life. I’m a member of Marriage Friendly Therapists, an advanced practitioner network featured in USA Today, National Public Radio, and the Harvard Mental Health Letter, and am a New York State licensed psychoanalyst.
My articles on family life and emotional and spiritual growth have appeared in many national publications over the past twenty-five years, including Parents, Working Mother, and The New York Times Magazine, and I have written 6 books on family life. My blog posts are on The Good Men Project, and I was a contributing author to From the Ashes: A Spiritual Response to the Attack on America, a collection of essays written after September 11 and edited by Neale Donald Walsch and Desmond Tutu. I have also written on sandplay and women’s spirituality for the journal Women & Therapy.

At Brown University I received my A.B. with honors, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and earned my M.A. After studying at the Maryknoll School of Theology, I completed psychoanalytic training and taught at the Westchester Institute, a pioneer in the existential approach. As a member of the interfaith American Association of Pastoral Counselors, I have served as secretary for the Eastern Region. For many years I co-moderated the global pastoral-counseling list on the Internet. One of my specialties is helping interfaith and multicultural couples reach their relationship goals.
When I’m not in my office, I am a regular theatergoer and love to travel and spend time with family and friends. Here’s an interview PsychCentral, the largest mental health site on the net, did with me recently for their “Clinicians on the Couch” series.
Whether you are a couple or an individual, I work actively in our sessions to help you clarify and reach your goals. I share recent research, exercises to help you extend our time together at home, and skills to help you discover and build on your strengths and creativity.
